Celebrating Canada Day by picking luscious ripe strawberries and making four batches of jam.

Canada Day

Perhaps not the photo you would expect to see on Canada Day, but we decided to celebrate the occasion by taking an afternoon hike in the Gatineau Hills, far from the crowds and excitement of Parliament Hill. We only saw a handful of other people while we were on the trail so it was certainly a quieter way to reflect on Canada and what this country means to us. And I think it is a fitting way to spend the day, for what is it about Canada that is great if not its natural beauty?

Happy Canada Day!

Blessed with sunshine when rain and thunderstorms were forecast, the downtown core was filled with red and white. Pausing beside a bakery window I was amused by the bread moose. Behind were some Canada Day cookies. A little garish perhaps, especially compared to the window display at a neighbouring florist whose understated red and white arrangement was quite a contrast. It may be hard to see in the photo, but interspersed with the white firework-like chrysanthemums are shorter red-berried foliage.
